I, too, love the “accidental” photos, and photos through time, watching the people we love become.

It's my favorite thing ever, truly. I'm so glad you agree.

Tyler - We are sitting on a rock watching Paint Creek streak by, listening to your podcast on this lazy summer Sunday afternoon. Thank you. Your words provided a beautiful window into the images of life you capture, and then share. Listening to your writing, this phrase about what you see through your lens truly came to life for me: “These contradictions, in art, in me. These that live in the in-between moments…”

This captures the experience of the real world—unstaged, imperfect, and far from tidy. Thank you for the reminder that life's in-between moments are unposed and unprepared for. They are incredibly beautiful in their natural, unglamorous form, and we are better for experiencing them exactly as they are.

And congratulations on 30 years to working in photography. I’d love to hear about how much you struggled through the period when photographers started experimenting with camcorders and video.. lol

THank YOU my friend. I'm so glad that you, YOU so much more than so many people, know and trust and love the in-between moments. That you know their value, their beauty. Sharing that with you is magic.

Your life, your love; ah, it simultaneously feels hopeful and sorrowfully out of reach. The love I hold for your love is immense, the limitation of hope for myself feels almost the inverse

And yet, ah; the beauty of living, of loving, the complexity of love remains part of its uniqueness, and I regret none of it

I PROMISE it's not out of reach, it lives just beyond the refusal to settle. Honestly it was only after I resolved that I'd rather be alone than settle for less, that things started to find their way into my orbit. We just cannot live with closed doors that come with allowing ourselves to settle for less. It changes everything.

I do agree that I’d rather be alone than to settle, I suppose the concern is that I will only ever be the what-if path on the route to others finding their joy — that I am the less that would require someone else to settle for, as so much of my history seems to indicate. (Apologies, the melancholy is seeping today!)

What was the title of the book that brought us this loving podcast/glimpse into your life?

I'm one of the Walking Poetry Project people and was curious as to if it was ever finished. My word is still one of my favorite tattoos I have.

We're still going! I keep getting random entries but need to send out a reminder!

I’ve often wondered if you still use film and if you have any kind of process. Maybe that’s something you can talk about on a Wednesday chat.

I’m not seeing an Inside Signal Fire. Is Substack being weird or did it not get posted?

Tyler Knott Gregson's avatar

Hi there! A few fun changes coming for Inside Signal Fire actually! I'm going to use it as an opportunity to meld the Fireside and Inside Signal Fire into one thing so a REAL discussion can take place. I'm super excited about it, and more info will come soon! As for film, with our Fujis we don't need real film, which is good as it's gotten SO expensive and really you can only mail out for it. Ugh.

Andrea Davis's avatar

Thank you. Substack gets weird with me sometimes so I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something. I didn’t think about the cost of film. Mailing it out doesn’t sound fun either.

Photography ... I tried my hand at it and was in love with black and white images, which I would then, sometimes, hand paint. Mostly of friends and artsy sort of objects ...

These days, I use my phone to capture, mostly, my black cat, Macaroon. Her, and just snippets and vignettes of my life. My coffee mug and water bottle next to a stack of cookies, for instance, with a remark about how it was tea time. These are generally posted to Facebook but sometimes are cross-posted to Instagram automatically ... I think. I've been considering putting these little snippets up on Substack too ... I just never seem to get around to it. Silly, something about posting to Substack on the phone ...

When it comes to places I've been, I am usually too awed by what I am seeing to think to capture it on the camera. Sometimes it diminishes the moment for me.

I remember looking into Switzerland from a small town in Germany. It was just after sunset, and the mountains were breathtaking. I was in tears at the beauty, and taking a photo seemed like sacrilege somehow.

But then, I travel with someone who takes copious amounts of photos, so I always get to live it again through him. Which also reminds me of being >with< him since we so rarely get to be with each other in real life.

I want to see your black and white photos! I can only imagine they are stunning. As for your phone, download DAZZ cam! It lets you use your phone, and take images that look just like the Fuji photos!

Gayle Ellison-Davis's avatar

I'll see if I can dig them up! Probably in the attic ... and I always used Fuji film. Cool app!! Thanks for the tip!

This is beautiful! As someone who also lives a creative, entrepreneurial life, I can relate to that sentiment of "I wouldn't trade it for anything." Some days are hard. At least once a week I question everything and wonder if I should get a "real job." But I always circle back to the same truth - that this life I've created is uniquely mine and has brought opportunities and experiences I never dreamed of. It is worth every tear, every hard day, every bit of discomfort because I get to do what I love.

This is exactly it. Exactly. Thank you.
