Ok, let’s discuss the elephant in the room: I know the title says the 5th of November and today is only the 4th, but the rhyme is what the rhyme is and so even though we’re a day early for it, Kindling’s are on Tuesday and it’s Tuesday so dammit, I’m SORRY, I just didn’t have the heart to make the title the 4th of November. ANYWAY. Today is the day before November 5th, which is also known as Guy Fawkes Day or Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, and while this is primarily a British holiday, (and I am very much Scottish and Irish and there is VERY much a difference) I just spoke at length about how it’s cool and fun and worth it to celebrate what other cultures find worthy of celebration.
Guy Fawkes Night is a celebration that commemorates that fateful November 5 back in 1605 when Guy Fawkes was arrested whilst guarding hoards of explosives that he and fellow plotters stashed beneath the House of Lords. Their plan was to blow up the House of Lords and in doing so, assassinate the Protestant King James 1 and his entire parliament. Clearly he failed, and so this night is their firework celebration of that fact. I am NOT going to choose sides on that fight, so instead, we’re going to go another way…
