Love the midway photos… thanks for that , as they bring back my childhood impressions of the transient and mysterious life of midways and carnies. They seemed to pop-up in barren fields, attract the starved attention of our mundane lives, and then disappear, leaving the field (and our lives) quiet again…
I will never, ever, ever not be drawn to that strange, fleeting, wandering life of a circus/carnival. Something pulls me so hard. Beautiful little tribute.
I love a good state or county fair!! So many good memories! I absolutely love the photo of the blurry ride; the lights are just magical. :) And of course that b/w photo of Sarah is perfect! She is soooo photogenic. And the photographer is pretty good too. ;)
The blurry ride photo just feels so so so frozen in a time I didn't even exist in, but wish I did haha. ANd yes, she is so photogenic, it's insane how you cannot get a bad photo of her. :)
THE FAIR!!!! Omg, what magic. There's nothing like having something like that because it makes summer feel so nostalgic and magical. It brings the joy of childhood, no matter what age you are. Thank you for sharing!
Excellent article and beautiful pictures!! The way you described the lights at the fair and summer and just how it feels good, felt so incredibly good to read while also feeling the lighting from the photo. I know these feelings pretty intimately as I used to work and run games at the fair for a billion years.. lol :) but that was a billion years ago.. so this felt extra special to read and relive and know someone else felt that too!! You and Sarah are amazing!! LOve all that you both do! xx
Thank you so much, and honestly, thinking of doing the job you did makes me so insanely jealous for some reason. I've so long been drawn to that life, and I have no idea why.
It helps when taking pictures of Sarah that she is SO photogenic ... so beautiful. Love the lights of the carnival and your captures.
And ... August into September has/is always been bittersweet. I have thought it was from all the years it marked the end of summer by going back to school, but I can feel the turn of the weather in the breezes already, and it's just a time of harvest and ... dying? ... as the trees change and the flowers expire. Even with the beauty of it, there is still a letting go that pulls at my heart. But the light of fall is so warm ... looking forward to what you capture for September.
It IS a bit of a cheat code aiming my camera at Sarah. She makes it look easy, though she'd fight anyone that says so, she hates having her photo taken. Maybe less now?
The full fairgrounds and the Ferris wheel closeup—wow!!!! I wish I was there!
I wish you were too! It's always so fantastic and odd!

Midway
Bright lights, taste of sweets,
Midways spring from sleeping fields,
Look past—still again.
