I can’t name just one artist but many that when their music comes on I’m transported to a chapter in my life, I am grateful that I listened when you recommended Gregory, I very much love his music , he is very compatible with many activities especially yoga and writing . My younger self loved Jewel, Jim Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Portishead, Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Radiohead, Coldplay, Norah Jones, just to name a few. The Morning Phase album by Beck is our fav jeep drive sound track. I stopped and told everyone when I first discovered Flora Cash, and also Gregory Alan Iskavov recently. My girlfriends and I love to see The Avett Brothers live so they hold a special place in my heart as well. Music is a powerful, wonderful art.

I love this piece because Gregory Alan Isakov is also part of the soundtrack of my life too. I know I shared before that my husband and I always remember driving through the Rockies at dusk to That Moon Song feeling like our love and our little red car was cradled by all of the magic in the whole Universe. I also especially love 3 AM and the lyrics “I wish I was a sailor so I would know just how to trust, maybe I could bring some grace back home, dry land for each of us…” Amazing (and goosebumps) every single time whether I’m driving, or elbow-deep in soapy dishwater in my kitchen. His music is a gift. Truly.

If you’ve never heard of Joshua Radin you might enjoy his music as well. He has also been an important part of the soundtrack of my life and you might just like him a lot too. His song What If You is the soundtrack of the midnight dances that my husband surprised me with at an historic castle landmark one time, tucking his cellphone into the front pocket of his dress shirt on the other side of where my head rested against his wildly beating heart as we danced there, just the two of us in the moonlight. Everything’ll Be Alright has soothed my heart many times and Winter literally feels like the first snowfall to me. Check it out. You might just find you like him too :)

Like you, I can’t quite recall the first song of Gregory’s that I ever heard. I know it was from his album This Empty Northern Hemisphere, and I want to say it was Big Black Car, but I can’t be sure. What I do know for certain was that it was if I had found the soundtrack to my soul. It sounds a bit dramatic to say it like that, but I felt completely transported listening to his music. It was the peace I felt at the very essence of my being. Especially songs like Master And A Hound and Words.

The only other artist who has transported me so is Ryan O’Neal, who writes under the name Sleeping At Last. His music encompasses such a wide range of the human experience, such as passion and joy and grief. He is the only artist whose every album in full is downloaded on my phone. His songs Overture, Light, and Saturn from his Atlas 1 album are some of the most beautiful pieces I’ve ever heard in my life. If nothing else, I highly recommend listening to one of those three.

While I didn't know of Gregory Alan Isakov until today (and thanks for this musical lead) I can relate wholeheartedly to the level of emotional connection and investment you describe...how music can save your life. For me, that feeling goes to Dermot Kennedy. His songs just reach deep in my heart and squeeze. I feel my own emotions in the lyrics and it's as if he's speaking for me. I think "After Rain" is the most poignant one....but I could change my mind and feel it's another of his songs depending on the day.

Music, whomever resonates with us, is a certain magic. ✨🎶✨

I too fell in love with Gregory Alan Isakov’s music after seeing one of your Haikus on his album. To this day his music brings me such peace. I’m loving sifting through the comments here and gathering more recommendations too!

Ah, where would any of us be without music? Unlike anything else, it can immediately transport us to another place, another life, a better Earth, the best version of ourselves. Kiet and I have shared many a moments on the road and in our kitchen over This Empty Northern Atmosphere album (this was our first), and then others. As I read this tribute and all the replies, I feel immediately connected to everyone, the way you do in those rare moments when you walk into a room of strangers and lock eyes with some and know these, these have always been your people. And time is no more linear and it never was. Two of my favorite suggestions, Vandaveer's A Pretty Thin Line (https://youtu.be/kfIRZakqGrc) and Jesus in New Orleans by Over the Rhine. The first song takes a bit to build up, but so worth the wait:

" I've been sitting at home for a couple of days now...

Fidgeting in my bones...

Don't ever really wanna leave...

Don't wanna stand still...

Every thought feels overblown...

I hear the thunder clapping all around me ... the world, it has caught fire...

Every gear in retrograde, I'm grinding...

Must be that big sun sitting high up in the sky...

Beyond bright...

Shining white right in my eyes...

When your heart's so full it's a pretty thin line 'tween burning and being burned alive..."

Enjoy!
