I love The Goonies if only for the nostalgia of sitting on my parents' brown plaid couch in our basement, watching it with my sister, likely running off an OLD VHS tape my dad recorded and re-recorded from the tv. I can picture his writing of "The Goonies", hastily scratched in pencil below a crossed out line of "Bob Vila" or "This Old House".
A few years ago, when my boys were entering tweendom, or right in the midst of it, I thought it was time to introduce them to the cinematic masterpiece, somehow fully forgetting the scene where Chunk breaks Mrs. Walsh's statue of David. The cacophony and giggles that ensued after that scene will never be forgotten in this house. May The Goonies continue to live on for generations to come and provide memories to those that come after us.
Agree totally! “Goonies” is a great example of how incredibly strong a childhood friendship is and why it sometimes goes far beyond and longer than anyone would expect. That movie is made with that incredible glue that makes it stick around for so long on many “favorites “ lists. Perhaps it’s the same glue that makes childhood friendships stay together so long in life. I was chatting with a long time close friend about relationships yesterday. He was curious about what makes long term personal relationships work. I wont say why, but you probably know already by the mere presence of the question. When people ask me about my relationship with my partner, I never know what to say, but yesterday I answered with a question. “Did you have a best friend growing up?” “Yes!”, he replied. I pushed the point with another question. “Would you have ‘taken a bullet’ for that friend when you were young?” “…And foolish.” Was his quick reply. “But, of course I would because I did not know any better as a kid.” He added. “So, that is what a long term relationship is like. The relationship is more important than anything. The relationship is the glue”, I concluded. “Like a kids friendship? He asked rhetorically. Then he paused, and said; “Well, actually… that is starting to make sense to me.” “Of course, we ought know!”, I said as I walked out of the room ( ‘cue microphone drop’).
I remember when you asked us what our favorite movies were, like a million months ago, and my answer was The Goonies…. It is the epitome and soundtrack of my childhood, as well as my adulthood. It’s the movie that I press play on every night when I go to bed. It’s a mix of white noise and magic that helps lull me to sleep with nostalgia and hope. Now in our 40s, my younger brother and I will always be Goonies… “It’s our time”
The music ... Cyndi Lauper. Takes me right back there. Seen in my 20s, loved it. A touch of 'Stand By Me' ... a touch of Peter Pan, but all Goonies. [one of the names our cat Macaroon goes by, by the way.] It all comes back.
First why why why can we not comment pics substack?!? If we could I would post a pic of 50 yr old me (typing out that 5 0 was a reality check I’m going to just ignore bc reality bites…) sporting my very old and very loved Goonies tshirt. It has tiny holes and bleach spots, which the bleach spots are odd bc I don’t use bleach, and I get compliments every time I wear it from all age groups. It makes me smile bc if you like my shirt you are my people! Goonies Never Say Die ☠️
Kids being kids…nothing better than that. 🖤
Always the best thing. Stranger Things picking up the mantle.

Oh man you nailed it here. The bonds we make when kids, what a beautiful and often enduring thing. The glue. It's the glue. I love this, so much.
Such an iconic film, and has aged remarkably well! Our childhoods were filled with such a promise of adventure thanks to films like this.
"A promise of adventure" is exactly what it was, what it always is.

I LOVE this. Our dog goes by the same thing! Gilly Goonie Gregson!
