Long we’ve been taught to guard our hearts, protect them with armor and care, hold them close and let few in. We’re taught that vulnerability is weakness, that giving pieces of ourselves away mean we’ll be left with nothing. How wrong this, how catastrophic and tragic that we associate the giving of ourselves, our love, with a weakness. I feel pride in knowing I belong to those I love, I feel comfort knowing that long after I’m gone, those pieces will spread and survive. Give, it’s why we’re here.
great imagery. did you ever hear the song "White As Snow" by U2 on their 2009 album "No Line on the Horizon." your poem reminds me of the imagery that comes to mind with that song. after my divorce/separation in 2009, this album was in my car and I listened to this song about 400 times. it's a barren song about a desert snow sort of covered in scratches. i like, the idea of the crimson stains on the snow, the stark contrast, the permanence, the mess.
